Places to Go: What to do

Kristen + Nish’s Favorite Places in San Francisco
We’re both so excited to share this wonderful occasion with you, but hey, the wedding is only one day, right? Since some of you are coming out for an extended vacation, we thought we’d offer up some of our favorite places to eat, shop and visit:

Restaurants

Belden Lane
Located between Pine & Bush, and Kearny & Montgomery
Francophiles can’t get enough of the terrific, little French restaurants located in this quiet little alleyway. This is a great place to eat lunch on a warm, sunny day.

Cortez
In Hotel Adagio
550 Geary Street
415.292.6360
One the most talked about new restaurants in town, Cortez is located in the Hotel Adagio where some of you are staying. We love their tapas inspired fare, don’t miss the soup shooters and the out-of-this-world desserts. After dinner, stop by the uber-swanky Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel across the street.

E&O Trading Company
314 Sutter Street
415.693.0303
This tasty Asian fusion restaurant is located right near Union Square.

Foreign Cinema
2534 Mission Street
415.648.7600
On the night we first met, we went to a party here. It’s one of our favorite restaurants in the city, and has both outdoor and indoor seating, a rarity in the city by the Bay. Check out this super cool review, rumor has it the author is a really swell guy.

Swan Oyster Depot
1517 Polk Street
415.673.1101
Any time a Nygaard is in town, they demand to go to this little seafood joint. Go early and be prepared to wait in line…trust us, it’s worth it!

Tallula
4230 18th Street
415.437.6322
A delicious little French-Indian fusion restaurant that our friend Harveen opened about a year ago, it’s like being at a great dinner party.

Bars

Jade Bar
650 Gough Street
415.869.1900
A fun, perpetually busy bar near chic Hayes Valley, the revealing men’s bathroom is worth the trip!
Lobby Lounge at the Ritz-Carlton – it doesn’t get more ritzy than this – and it’s right inside the hotel where our reception is…hmm, how convenient!

Rosewood
732 Broadway Street
415.951.4886
Easily one of the best bars in North Beach, if not the city. We’ve reserved the “secret” back room on Thursday night for everyone to meet up!

Big Foot Lodge
1750 Polk Street
415.440.2355
Our favorite neighborhood bar, barely a block from our new apartment, it’s kitshy-cool decor reminds Kristen of Vermont.

Shopping

Hayes Valley
Easiest the best little shopping neighborhood in the city. This street running East to West between Franklin and Laguna is home to some of the coolest clothing and furniture stores around. One of the few things we disagree about is the location of the best French fries, but we both agree that you can’t go wrong with either Frjtz or Absinthe

Union Square Shopping
If you’re staying in one of the hotels (link to hotel section) we recommended, you’re either in walking distance to or right in Union Square. You’ll find all the major retail stores, including Nish’s favorite, Ted Baker, and the flagship stores for Banana Republic, Old Navy and Gap…all three owned by Gap Inc., where Kristen works.

Union Street Shopping
Running east to west, from Gough to Fillmore, you’ll find plenty of interesting and unique shops, plus another one of our favorite restaurants Betelnut Pejiu Wu.

Method
Pop-Up Shop - this is a must-visit. Working as a consultant for Ammo Marketing,
Nish was in charge of overseeing the build out of method's first retail experience, and also organizing fun events to celebrate the temporary store. If the pilot store is successful, they close up shop here and will move into other cities to rid the world of dirty!

Attractions

SONY Metreon
4th and Mission
This is a large food and movie complex, right near Yerba Buena Gardens.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
151 Third Street
415.358.4000
Just down on 3rd Street is SFMoMA, one of the finest collections of modern art in the world.

Asian Art Museum
200 Larkin Street
415.581.3500
Nish has done a lot of marketing consulting at the Asian Art Museum, located near the Civic Center. We both love the exhibits and the architecture of this beautiful museum housed in the former public library building.

Ferry Building Marketplace
One Ferry Building
415.693.0996
If you love to eat, don’t miss this newly reopened San Francisco landmark. Similar to European food markets, you can stroll, shop and eat wonderful, local cuisine. Some of our favorites are The Slanted Door, one of the city’s hottest restaurants, Hog Island Oyster Company, and Cowgirl Creamery. Yum!

But don’t let us tell you what to do; here are some great sources to figure out your own San Francisco adventure: City Search
SF Station (editor’s note – Nish has done some reviews for them!)

Flavorpill – a weekly events e-newsletter worth signing up for, Nish also does some write-ups for them as well
You can also pick up free copies of The SF Bay Guardian and SF Weekly, both have great ideas of what to do that week.
If you’re going up to wine country, which we highly recommend, two good starting points are Napa Valley and Sonoma. Don’t miss Gundlach-Bundshu in Sonoma and Niebaum-Coppola in Napa.

And finally, the San Francisco Visitors and Convention Bureau has some great information about sites and attractions.

Whew! Better change your plans and move out here!
